New Arrivals

Fans of horror, rejoice!

We just got some new friends in today!

When you come upstairs, you may notice that the first featured shelf that you see has been tweaked a bit.

Rue Morgue

Jody was recently gifted with a box full of Rue Morgue magazines, and generously decided to share the boon with all of us!

If you are not familiar with Rue Morgue, it is a magazine devoted to horror fiction. They cover books (novels, graphic novels, and comics all included), movies, video games, and events. If it’s related to the horror genre, chances are pretty good that you will read about it in these pages.

The company started in 1997 and since then has branched out to encompass not only the magazine publication but now also includes a television channel, a book series, and film production. They also host and participate in a horror expo, as well as a monthly film series.

This year, the magazine has received nominations in the 17th annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards. Categories include: Best Magazine, Best Article, Best Interview, Best Column, and Best Cover. (There’s still time to vote, if you are a fan of their work.)

Of course, our First Lady of the Raven felt that copies of the magazine would be right at home here because so many of us dig the horror scene. But more importantly, the magazine’s name is a nod to Poe’s story “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”.

This short story was first published in Graham’s Magazine in 1841, and is considered to be the first modern detective story. It begins with our narrator marveling over how wonderful a thing an analytical mind is, and how such a mind must work. We then are introduced to his brilliant friend, Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin. The two companions learn of  grisly murders in the Rue Morgue from the papers, and soon become involved in the investigation.

It’s a very good (and quick) read; if you have a moment and would like to check out the short story whose detective protagonist is said to have paved the way for the likes of Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot, I would highly recommend it.

We hope that you enjoy checking these out at the Raven!
